A small village on the old Michigan Avenue route west, with working farmland all around it. Village lots in the middle, section-line farms beyond.

A village on the old Michigan Avenue route

Parma grew up along the old Michigan Avenue road west, which is why the village has the shape it does — a thin strip of older houses and former commercial buildings along the route, with the farmland starting almost immediately behind them.

Those roadside properties are the awkward ones for placement. Many sit close to the road with a short drive and no room behind, and the road itself carries enough traffic that a container at the kerb needs thinking about rather than assuming. Where there is a drive we will use it; where there is not, Parma Township is the permit authority for village streets and the county road department for the through route.

The housing is mostly pre-war, which means plaster interiors and dense demolition debris. For interior work here the smaller container is usually the right one, with a swap planned if the job runs on — plaster and lath reaches a container's weight limit long before it fills the space.

Section-line farms and what comes out of them

Behind the village, Parma is laid out on the section grid like most of western Jackson County: mile roads, long frontages and farmsteads set well back from them. The clearances out here are agricultural, and they are a different job from a house.

A working farmstead accumulates buildings — a barn, a milk house, a corn crib, a machine shed, a couple of lean-tos added over the years. Clearing even one of them usually means a thirty yard container, and clearing a property means several in sequence. The sequencing is worth planning: we would far rather schedule three containers over two weeks than improvise the second and third.

What comes out is also different. Farm properties hold the exact material Michigan bans from landfill, and they hold a lot of it: tractor and implement tyres, lead-acid batteries from vehicles that have not run in years, waste oil, drums, and chemical containers that need hazardous handling rather than a container at all. Get those out first. One set of whole tyres visible in a load is enough to have the whole container refused at the facility.

Long drives and the eight weeks you cannot deliver

The single biggest practical constraint in Parma Township is the drive. Farmstead drives here run several hundred feet off the road, they are gravel or two-track, and they cross ground that holds water.

From December through to early March that is not a problem at all — frozen ground carries a loaded roll-off better than a gravel drive ever does unfrozen. Through summer and autumn it is fine. For roughly eight weeks in spring it is genuinely not possible, because the frost comes out of the top of the ground while the subsoil below it is still frozen and the water has nowhere to go. A drive that took a truck in February will not take one in April.

Some township roads also carry seasonal weight restrictions during frost law season, which limits loaded trucks on certain routes regardless of what your own drive is like. Tell us the length and surface of the drive when you ring, and if it is spring, expect us to suggest a placement nearer the road. A longer carry for you is a better outcome than a truck sunk in your lane. More on seasonal placement →

Permits

Do you need one in Parma?

On your own driveway or private property, no — not anywhere in Jackson County. On the street, the kerb or any public right of way, yes, and in Parma that is issued through Parma Township. Permits go to the property owner or the contractor doing the work rather than to the hauler, so the application will be yours. Most deliveries here go on the driveway, which needs no permit at all. Tell us the address when you ring and we will tell you which applies before you start ringing round. More on permits and placement →
