Dumpster Rental in Chelsea, Michigan
A small Washtenaw County city with a preserved 19th-century downtown and a ring of newer subdivisions around it. Two completely different kinds of job depending on which side of town you are on.

Chelsea is really two towns sharing a ZIP code, and which one you are in decides almost everything about the container.
The old core around Main Street and the mill is nineteenth century and tightly built. Lots are narrow, drives are single-width where they exist at all, and a surprising number of properties are served from behind. Interiors here are plaster, the basements are stone or early block, and the demolition debris is dense. Smaller containers, carefully placed.
Then there is the ring of subdivisions that went up from the 1990s outwards, west and north of the centre. Wide drives, three-car garages, open frontage and drywall interiors. On those jobs the limit is volume rather than weight, and a thirty yard container is often exactly right where it would be entirely wrong a mile away.
So when you ring from Chelsea, the useful thing to say is not the street name — it is roughly when the house was built. That single answer moves you between two completely different recommendations.
Washtenaw County means a different permit desk
Chelsea sits in Washtenaw County, not Jackson, and that matters the moment the container needs to go anywhere other than your own property. The City of Chelsea handles its own streets, and the authority for a road outside the city limits is different again — the township or the Washtenaw County road commission depending on which road it is.
None of that is difficult, but it is a different phone call from the one a Jackson address would make, and the application is yours rather than ours. Permits are issued to the property owner or the contractor doing the work, never to the hauler.
On your own driveway, in Chelsea as anywhere else, you need nothing at all. That covers the large majority of residential deliveries here, particularly in the newer subdivisions where there is more than enough room on the concrete.

Downtown and commercial work
Chelsea's downtown is a working commercial street rather than a preserved one, and the fit-out and turnover work that comes with that is a decent part of what we deliver into the city. Those jobs have their own constraints.
Access is usually from the rear, through a service lane shared with several other businesses, which means placement is a negotiation with the neighbours as much as with us. Blocking a shared lane for a week is not an option, and we would far rather plan a container that goes in on a Monday and out on a Wednesday than one that sits inconveniently for ten days.
Upper floors are the other feature. A great many of these buildings have storage or apartments above the shop, reached by one narrow stair, and clearing them is a materials-handling problem before it is a container problem. Stage everything at ground level first, then load the container in one organised pass — loading in dribs and drabs wastes a third of the volume.
And the buildings are old enough that the same caution applies as in central Jackson: assume asbestos in floor tile, pipe wrap and old mastic until it is tested, and plan around it rather than discovering it on day two.
Do you need one in Chelsea?
On your own driveway or private property, no — not anywhere in Washtenaw County. On the street, the kerb or any public right of way, yes, and in Chelsea that is issued through the City of Chelsea. Permits go to the property owner or the contractor doing the work rather than to the hauler, so the application will be yours. Most deliveries here go on the driveway, which needs no permit at all. Tell us the address when you ring and we will tell you which applies before you start ringing round. More on permits and placement →
