A small village in the south-west corner of the county with a strong barn and outbuilding density. More agricultural clearance work here than household.

Hanover sits in the south-west corner of Jackson County, and the work here is mostly agricultural clearance rather than household. Barns, machine sheds, corn cribs, granaries and the lean-tos that got added to all of them — the density of outbuildings per property is higher around Hanover and Horton than anywhere else we cover.
That changes the whole shape of the conversation. On a house clear-out we ask about the age of the building and whether the basement has been wet. Out here the first question is how many structures there are, because a single barn will absorb a thirty yard container and most of a second, and a full property clearance is a multi-container job that wants planning rather than improvising.
If you are clearing a farmstead, ring and walk us through it building by building. We will plan a sequence, and a planned sequence of three containers is far less disruptive than three separate improvised bookings.
Timber, metal and the things that pack badly
Barn debris is unlike anything that comes out of a house. It is long, it is irregular, and it is mostly timber — beams, planking, siding boards, rafters, fencing, pallets and whatever was stacked in the loft. Loaded whole, it wastes an enormous amount of container volume, because nothing nests and everything bridges.
Cutting it down is the single highest-value hour you can spend on these jobs. Timber cut to four feet or less lies flat and stacks; full-length rafters and planking do not, and you will fill a thirty yard container with the same material that would have fitted a twenty. The same applies to fencing and to any sheet material.
Scrap metal is worth separating rather than loading. Old implements, sheet roofing, wire and machinery parts have a route of their own, and taking them out before the container arrives leaves the volume for material that has nowhere else to go.
What cannot go in at all is the agricultural material Michigan bans: tractor and implement tyres, lead-acid batteries, waste oil, drums, and chemical containers, which need hazardous handling entirely separately. The banned list in full →
Field lanes and the spring problem
Access in Hanover Township is the familiar rural pattern, only more pronounced. Farm drives and field lanes here are long, unsurfaced and crossing ground that holds water, and there is usually no alternative route in.
Frozen, they are excellent — a loaded roll-off on a frozen two-track is more secure than on soft gravel any day of the year. Dry summer and autumn, fine. During thaw, which in this corner of the county runs through March and well into April, they are not usable for a loaded truck and we will not pretend otherwise.
Some roads in the township also carry seasonal weight limits in frost law season, which restricts a loaded truck regardless of what your own lane is like. If you are planning a barn clearance, plan it for autumn. If it has to happen in spring, we will look at a placement up by the road — a long carry, but a container that can actually be collected.
Do you need one in Hanover?
On your own driveway or private property, no — not anywhere in Jackson County. On the street, the kerb or any public right of way, yes, and in Hanover that is issued through Hanover Township. Permits go to the property owner or the contractor doing the work rather than to the hauler, so the application will be yours. Most deliveries here go on the driveway, which needs no permit at all. Tell us the address when you ring and we will tell you which applies before you start ringing round. More on permits and placement →
